FAQs

Are you a faith-based counseling center?

We are not a faith-based counseling center however, we can provide a faith perspective if the client would like to engage in that as a part of the counseling work. Our office is located at a local church. However, A Space Between Counseling Center is only renting an office space, we are not affiliated with Second Baptist Church.

Do you take insurance?

We do not take insurance for several reasons. We understand this can be a deterrent for some. But we work very hard for our clients and have chosen to keep our costs significantly low in order to provide a reasonable and competitive price for therapeutic sessions.

The first reason we do not take insurance is because we believe that while insurance has a wonderful place to help those access care, it can impede the clinical work that may be needed. Insurance companies limit the number of sessions a client can receive and require a diagnosis after the initial session.  We feel as though the client determines the amount of time needed in therapy, not an insurance company.

The second reason is that one of our therapists, Sarah Gerke, is still an Associate. This means that she is still under the supervision of a fully licensed therapist. Insurance companies will not allow Associates to be paneled to use insurance in their practice.

However, we can provide a superbill that will allow the client (sole responsibility of the client) to submit their session to their insurance company for possible reimbursement.

We do provide a sliding scale based on household income. Please inquire when requesting an appointment and the sliding scale will be provided.

What is the difference between and LPC and an LMFT?

The primary difference between LMFTs and LPCs are the populations they work with or specialize in and the issues that are being treated. LMFT stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. LMFTs are more likely to treat issues within the marriage and family dynamic, typically using a holistic approach. LPC stands for Licensed Professional Counselor. LPC’s help treat mental health issues that may stem from a variety of causes. Both licenses allow for clinicians to see individuals, couples, and families but use a different lens to view the problem and goals.

Do you offer EMDR?

Currently neither therapist is certified to provide EMDR. We can provide referrals if needed. We do practice trauma-informed care but do not have the ability to engage in EMDR therapy at this time.

Is virtual therapy effective?

Studies have shown that virtual therapy sessions are just as effective as in-person sessions. Clients are often more comfortable starting the therapeutic process when they are in the comfort of their own space.
